THERE WERE ROARS from the Mexican fans as McLaren's Sergio Pérez took his first ever Formula One win at the Doofenshmirtz Grand Prix yesterday. He becomes the first Mexican race winner since Pedro Rodríguez at the 1970 Belgian Grand Prix.

Spare a thought for Ferrari's Felipe Massa though, as the Brazilian's engine blew up just metres from what was supposed to be the end to Ferrari's points jinx. Massa, who was running in second, tried desperately to get his stricken car across the line, but it was no use. This race, had Massa not retired, would have also seen the first non-European podium since the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix, since Williams' Pastor Maldonado was running in third at the time.

The podium finishers were Pérez, Maldonado and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who scores his second Mercedes podium.
